Officials at the federal government have flagged repeated mistakes in how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's title appears in media reports and public communications.
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, signed off on a statement Friday addressing the issue. He urged journalists and organizations to double-check official titles before publishing anything.
According to him, careless errors like these are both preventable and damaging to national dignity. "The correct and official appellation is: His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria," Akume noted.
A national daily newspaper made the error on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, prompting the clarification. Akume said such slip-ups wouldn't happen with proper verification from official channels.
Journalists can verify the correct title through several platforms. These include the office's Facebook page (@OfficeoftheSGF), Instagram account (OfficialOSGFNG), and X handle (OfficialOSGF).
Email inquiries can also be sent to the office for verification purposes. Akume stressed that due diligence prevents these kinds of embarrassing mistakes entirely.
