The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has expressed his disappointment over the Super Eagles' lackluster performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, describing it as a "very sad moment."
The team, which was expected to dominate Group C, has instead found itself languishing in fifth place out of six teams, trailing behind first-placed Rwanda, second-placed South Africa, and third-placed Benin Republic.
With only three draws and one defeat in the qualifiers so far, the Super Eagles are now facing an uphill battle to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The team must win all their remaining games to have a chance of qualifying for the tournament.
In response to the team's poor performance, the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, summoned Ibrahim Gusau to a three-hour meeting to discuss the situation.
The current coach, Finidi George, was also asked to submit a technical report on the team's recent 1-1 draw with South Africa and 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.
Gusau assured the public that the NFF is working tirelessly in conjunction with the minister to implement holistic measures that will revitalize Nigerian football and improve the team's performance.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup and hinted at upcoming measures to be announced by the NFF.
In a bid to turn the tide, the NFF is reportedly planning to appoint a technical adviser who will work alongside coach Finidi George to oversee the remaining games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
As the Super Eagles face mounting pressure to redeem themselves, the Nigerian football community eagerly awaits the implementation of these measures and hopes for a resurgence in the team's performance.
