Nigeria's emergency agency has welcomed 270 citizens back from South Africa this week. They arrived under a voluntary return programme coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency.
NEMA's Lagos operations head, Mohammed Olatunde, confirmed the arrivals on Thursday. All returnees had completed mandatory screening before boarding their flights home.
They touched down at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos yesterday morning. Government officials and partner agencies waited to receive them at the terminal.
According to Olatunde, the feds arranged transport to get people home. "We ensured safe passage to their various destinations," he noted in a statement.
Medical teams stood by for anyone needing urgent care. Ambulances and emergency support services were on standby throughout the process.
Olatunde stressed NEMA's role in this work. He said the agency remains committed to helping Nigerians return with dignity and safety.
The programme itself aims to be orderly and respectful. It prioritizes the welfare of citizens choosing to come back from abroad.
NEMA plans to keep working with other government bodies on this. Stakeholders will continue supporting returnees as they rebuild their lives at home.
