Soludo Accuses Opposition of Misinformation and Distortion of Achievements in Anambra

Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has accused opposition voices in the state of attempting to discredit his administration’s achievements to score cheap political points.

Soludo has warned against the dangers of a single story and the spread of fake news, which he believes can lead to anarchy.

The Governor’s statement came in response to a viral video on social media and some mainstream news outlets claiming that a road in Ochanja area of Onitsha was washed away by flood after a heavy rain on Monday evening.

The video alleged that the road was poorly constructed and commissioned by the Soludo-led administration.

However, the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, clarified that the road in question is still under construction and has not been commissioned.

According to professional explanations from the contracting firm and the Commissioner for Works in Anambra State, the incident was a result of inclement rainfall and standard construction procedures.

When the engineers noticed that the base course was wet, they cut off the portion that was laid on the wet surface and used it to fill the adjoining street.

This cutting of asphalt laid on wet surface is in line with industry best practices and international standards in road construction.

The flood and the flooding from the blocked culvert did not affect the road pavement of the road as laid.

Governor Soludo also alleged that the trending video included misleading footage of a different, already existing road that was not under construction.

He expressed disappointment that some mainstream media organizations carried the video without verification.

A group of market men and women in Ochanja area alongside some residents have staged a protest against the misinformation, praising the quality of road being constructed by the Governor in the area.

Soludo has advised citizens of the state to verify any information before believing it and appealed to newsmen to always investigate any information before publishing.

The Governor’s warning against the distortion of realities concerning the activities of his administration highlights the importance of responsible journalism and the need for citizens to be critical consumers of information.
