Joe Igbokwe, a prominent All Progressives Congress chieftain, has dismissed Atiku Abubakar's fitness to lead Nigeria, saying the country's finances cannot be placed in his hands. Igbokwe made the assertion in a Facebook post on Saturday, arguing that the African Democratic Congress leader lacks the trustworthiness required for such responsibility.
The APC figure invoked former President Olusegun Obasanjo's long-standing criticism of Atiku to buttress his position. "His principal, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has told us in no uncertain terms that he cannot be trusted," Igbokwe wrote on the social media platform.
Obasanjo and Atiku have traded accusations for years, with the ex-president claiming his former deputy orchestrated attempts to remove him from office during his tenure. The retired military ruler has also accused Atiku of bribing the late House Speaker Ghali Umar Na'Abba to pursue an impeachment agenda.
Atiku hit back at these claims, contending that Obasanjo's allegations were both reckless and unjust. He noted that Na'Abba, who is deceased, cannot defend himself against such serious accusations, making the ex-president's statements particularly troubling.
The renewed attacks come as political temperatures rise ahead of electoral contests. Igbokwe's latest salvo suggests the APC remains determined to undermine Atiku's political standing among Nigerians.
