Soaring Food Prices Cause Hardship for Market Leaders in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Ogun States

Market leaders from various states in Nigeria, including Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Ogun, have expressed their frustration and concern over the consistent surge in the prices of foodstuffs, which has exacerbated hunger and poverty among the citizens.

According to market leaders in Ado-Ekiti, the past few weeks in 2024 have been particularly hard for traders compared to 2023, with almost all products and foodstuffs in the market increasing in price by more than 30%.

Similarly, the Iyalaje of Provision Goods traders in the area stated that business is not only slow but also very difficult to break even due to the economic situation in the country.

In Akure, the Erelu Iyaloja General described the situation as unprecedented, with prices of food items going off the roof and things getting out of hand.

She called on the Nigerian government to act quickly and address the issue before it leads to further suffering.

Meanwhile, pepper and tomato sellers in Osun State are worried that their members are at risk of running out of business if the situation continues.

They attribute the rising prices to insecurity in the northern part of the country, which has led to a decrease in supply as farmers cannot access their farms.

The soaring food prices have not only affected traders but also families, who are now unable to afford basic necessities and are facing increased levels of hunger and starvation.

The situation has become unbearable, with many struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families.

The Nigerian government must take immediate action to address the issue of soaring food prices and provide support to those most affected by the crisis.

This could include measures such as providing subsidies for food production, increasing food security, and implementing policies to control inflation.

The continuous increase in food prices in Nigeria is causing significant hardship for market leaders, traders, and families alike.

It is crucial for the government to intervene and implement measures to alleviate the suffering and ensure that everyone has access to affordable and nutritious food.
