Senator representing the Delta North Senatorial District in Nigeria Senate, Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparation & Repatriation, has endorsed Gambian Foreign Minister, Mamadou Tangara for the role of Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Senator Nwoko expressed his support in a statement issued from Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Nwoko, Tangara brings a wealth of experience that makes him a strong contender for the Commonwealth’s top position. "With an impressive track record as one of Africa's longest-serving foreign ministers, his expertise in diplomacy, politics, and development issues is unmatched," Nwoko stated.

He added, "Tangara’s profound understanding of global challenges and his unwavering dedication to Africa's progress make him an ideal candidate to lead the Commonwealth in these crucial times."

Nwoko also recounted a recent bilateral meeting in Abuja where Tangara shared his vision for both Africa and the Commonwealth. Tangara highlighted the need for reparative justice for Africa, addressing global peace and security issues, and promoting human rights, climate action, and digital inclusion across the Commonwealth nations.

“These critical issues,” Nwoko continued, “closely align with my own advocacy for reparative justice for Africa, and I am convinced that under Tangara's leadership, the Commonwealth can take a transformative role in addressing them.”

Nwoko was particularly impressed by Tangara’s powerful address at Chatham House in London, where the Gambian foreign minister passionately advocated for reparative justice and urged the Commonwealth to use its influence to facilitate meaningful dialogue on this pressing matter.

"His commitment to these causes is evident, and I am confident that his leadership would ensure the Commonwealth plays a more active role in promoting these initiatives," Nwoko added. He emphasized that reparative justice for Africa should be a top priority for the Commonwealth in the coming years.

Senator Nwoko also called on the Heads of Government to politically back Tangara’s candidacy, giving him the support needed to address these vital issues effectively.

The election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General will take place at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled for October 21-26, 2024, in Apia, Samoa.
