Senate President Akpabio Urges Germany Not to Deport Illegal Nigerian Migrants Amid Security Concerns

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed his concerns over Germany’s plan to deport about 12,000 illegal Nigerian migrants back to Nigeria.

Akpabio has urged the German government to reconsider this decision, as he believes it could exacerbate the already precarious security situation in Nigeria.

During a meeting with the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annette Gunther, Akpabio emphasized that the deportation of such a large number of illegal migrants could have a detrimental impact on Nigeria’s security.

He explained that many of these individuals may resort to criminal activities, such as militancy or banditry, in order to survive.

This, in turn, would further strain the country’s security apparatus, which is already grappling with various security challenges.

In response to Akpabio’s concerns, Ambassador Gunther acknowledged the need for collaboration between Germany and Nigeria in addressing the issue of illegal migration.

She emphasized the importance of finding a solution that would benefit both countries and ensure the well-being of the migrants in question.

The German government has been actively seeking to address the issue of illegal migration, with a particular focus on Nigerian nationals.

According to the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, there has been a significant increase in the number of Nigerian asylum seekers in recent years.

However, a large proportion of these applications are rejected due to a lack of a well-founded fear of persecution in Nigeria.

In light of this situation, the German government has been working on a new policy that aims to facilitate the return of rejected asylum seekers to their home countries.

The proposed policy includes measures such as providing financial assistance to the migrants and working with the Nigerian government to ensure their reintegration into society.

While the German government’s intentions may be well-meaning, the concerns raised by Senate President Akpabio highlight the need for a more nuanced approach to the issue of illegal migration.

It is crucial for both countries to work together to find a solution that addresses the root causes of migration and ensures the safety and well-being of all involved.
