Senate President Opeyemi Bamidele wants a major constitutional shake-up after 2027. He's backing a single six-year term for the President and all state governors.
Bamidele made the declaration on the Senate floor this past Tuesday. He believes the change would transform how leaders approach their duties from day one.
According to him, current two-term systems waste precious time. Leaders spend roughly eighteen months plotting re-election strategies instead of governing, he argued.
"If you know you are there for six years, only one tenure, you put in your best from day one," Bamidele noted on the chamber floor. He added that officials would recognize this as their sole opportunity to serve.
Bamidele said he'll champion the proposal when the 11th Senate resumes. He framed it as among his earliest legislative priorities once the chamber reconvenes.
He acknowledged the idea won't enjoy universal support among lawmakers. But Bamidele insisted nothing prevents him from advancing such proposals right now.
In his words, laws must evolve like living organisms. Parliament exists precisely to allow constitutional thinking to mature and develop over time, he said.
The Senate leader's stance signals a brewing debate over Nigeria's presidential architecture. Constitutional reform conversations could intensify as 2027 approaches.
Such a change would require backing from two-thirds of state legislatures. For now, Bamidele's position represents one influential voice pushing for serious reconsideration.
