Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele says lawmakers will vote on state police this week. He made the announcement at a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

Bamidele chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review. He confirmed the panel will submit its final report for chamber consideration before Friday.

According to him, creating state police is crucial to tackling Nigeria's security crisis. The National Assembly has prioritized the constitutional amendment, he noted.

Once senators approve it, the proposal moves to state legislatures for ratification. All 36 State Houses of Assembly must sign off on the change.

"We've decided to pass this amendment on state police this very week," Bamidele told reporters. He stressed there's no reason to delay the process further.

Federal lawmakers have held multiple meetings with key officials recently. President Tinubu, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, and Police Chief Olatunji Disu attended the sessions.

Stakeholders discussed the proposed state policing framework at length. Security concerns drove the urgency behind these consultations.

Bamidele's statement signals momentum on the controversial proposal. Many Nigerians have demanded state-level police forces for years.
