Katsina road collision claims eight lives, injures seventeen people

A collision on the Funtua–Katsina highway claimed eight lives on Sunday. The crash happened in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Emergency responders arrived at Layin Kukah around 1:32 p.m. A commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a Bajaj tricycle had collided head-on.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), 25 people were caught up in the accident. Among them were 16 adult males, four adult females, two boys and three girls.

Seventeen victims sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured included 15 adult males and two adult females with fractures and lacerations.

Eight people lost their lives at the scene. Two were adult males, two were adult females, one was a boy and three were girls.

DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, the FRSC's Public Education Officer, told reporters preliminary findings suggested wrongful overtaking caused the crash. Neither driver's identity had been confirmed at the time of his statement.

Rescue teams from the FRSC and Community Watch Corps evacuated victims immediately. Personnel transported the injured to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for emergency care.

Mortal remains were conveyed to General Hospital in Funtua for preservation. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident.

The FRSC has renewed its call to drivers across the nation. Officials emphasized strict compliance with traffic laws and warned against dangerous overtaking maneuvers.

Road safety officials said preventable accidents like this one continue to plague Nigerian highways. They urged the public to exercise caution during journeys.
