Security is core of governance, Delta govt tells NLC protesters

The Delta State Government has reassured workers and residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, insisting that security remains the foundation of effective governance.

The assurance was given on Wednesday at Government House, Asaba, by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, while receiving members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) who staged a peaceful protest as part of a nationwide demonstration against rising insecurity in the country.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Erijo acknowledged the concerns raised by the protesters, stressing that “the primary essence of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” and affirming that no responsible government could be indifferent to the safety of its people.

He noted that while Delta State continues to enjoy relative peace, the protest was a show of solidarity with Nigerians affected by the wider national security challenges.

Erijo also said the Federal Government was fully aware of the severity of the situation, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited some of the security problems currently confronting the nation.

“We equally recognise the efforts being made by the Federal Government to confront and address the ugly and disturbing security situations being experienced in some parts of the country,” he said.

Conveying the governor’s position, the Chief of Staff emphasised that strengthening peace and security remains a key pillar of the Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda, noting that “without peace and security, it would be impossible to effectively deliver the dividends of democracy.”

He assured the workers that their message had been clearly received and would be relayed to the appropriate authorities, including the President.

Commending the NLC for its peaceful conduct, Erijo praised the maturity displayed by the protesters and assured them that deliberate steps would continue to be taken to further enhance security across the country.

Earlier, the Secretary of the NLC, Delta State Council, Comrade Acrobat Enekhawore, lamented the devastating impact of insecurity on daily life, public confidence and economic activities nationwide.

The protest, which formed part of the NLC’s nationwide action, ended with a call for stronger collaboration between state and federal authorities to restore security, protect schools, workplaces and homes, and secure the future of the nation.
