The 7.5 magnitude quake struck the Noto Peninsula on January 3rd, 2024, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of at least 78 people.

Amidst the chaos, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) deployed search and rescue teams, including specially trained canines, to aid in the search for survivors.

Jennifer, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, proved to be the hero of the day when she discovered and rescued the elderly woman in Wajima City.

The rescue operation involved 4,600 personnel, including 3,000 Ground Self-Defense Force members and 1,600 firefighters, police officers, and coast guard members.

The search dog teams played a crucial role in locating survivors in the aftermath of the disaster.

In a statement, Defense Minister Kihara praised the efforts of the search and rescue teams and highlighted the importance of the canine unit.

“The Self-Defense Forces had rescued 122 people by yesterday, including an elderly woman in a house in Wajima City, who was found and rescued by a search dog (Jennifer),” he said.
