The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Gabam, has dismissed rumors of a potential alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Speaking during an appearance on Television Continental’s Politics Tonight, Gabam clarified that the party's focus remains on strengthening its structures and providing Nigerians with credible alternatives.
“There’s no alliance with anyone. As the chairman of the party, I have not engaged in any discussions about alliances. Our focus is on reviewing our strategies from 2024 and building a dynamic, inclusive platform,” Gabam said.
While addressing his meetings with El-Rufai, Gabam described the former Kaduna governor as a significant political figure but emphasized that their relationship is personal, not political. “El-Rufai is a major force, but my relationship with him is personal. Some people magnify his presence to create unnecessary controversy,” he explained.
Gabam also criticized the performance of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), highlighting their failures in governance and urging Nigerians to hold the current administration accountable. “The weaknesses of the PDP and APC are evident. Our responsibility in the SDP is to create a competitive and transparent platform where Nigerians feel empowered to aspire and thrive,” he stated.
On governance under President Bola Tinubu, Gabam expressed concerns about the administration’s disconnection from the realities facing Nigerians. “The cost of living is unbearable. Nigerians are paying more for electricity, food, and transportation, yet they’re told the economy is improving. These contradictions are deeply concerning,” he noted.
He criticized the President’s reliance on advisers, alleging they fail to provide accurate accounts of the nation’s struggles. “Leaders must have their ears to the ground. Waiting for filtered reports from officials risks ignoring the real issues on the streets,” Gabam warned.
The SDP chairman further raised concerns about political intimidation, citing the withdrawal of his security details without explanation. “My security was withdrawn a month ago without any formal notice. It’s alarming that state instruments are being used to intimidate those who offer constructive criticism,” he said.
Gabam urged the federal government to reevaluate its policies, particularly those impacting citizens' welfare. “Subsidy removal and other reforms have left Nigerians struggling. The government needs to prioritize policies that directly improve the lives of the people,” he added.
Reaffirming the SDP’s commitment to providing a viable alternative, Gabam concluded, “Our competition is legitimate and within the law. We are focused on addressing the issues that matter most to Nigerians and offering hope for the future.”
