A 45-year-old man died Wednesday after descending into an abandoned well in Kwa Town, Kano State. Yusuf Usman was attempting to retrieve a mobile phone when the tragedy struck.

The Kano State Fire Service received an emergency call at 11:13 a.m., according to their records. Rescue crews from the state headquarters rushed to the scene immediately.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered the victim trapped inside the well. It had been converted into a refuse pit over time.

The team managed to pull Usman out, but he was unconscious. Medical responders later pronounced him dead at the scene.

ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the service's spokesperson, explained what happened. "Oxygen depletion and excessive heat inside the pit caused his death," he noted.

Officials transferred the body to Alhaji Muktar, the Ward Head of Kwa Town. Burial arrangements would follow local customs, sources confirmed.

Alhaji Sani Anas, the Fire Service Director, seized the moment to warn residents. He urged families to cover wells properly and fill abandoned ones completely.

Community leaders and parents must take responsibility for their surroundings, Anas added. Preventive measures could save lives in the future, he stressed.

This incident highlights the dangers lurking in neglected infrastructure across rural Nigeria. Residents are now being asked to identify similar hazards in their communities.
