Following the official defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire structure of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a prominent APC chieftain and National Leader of the Southern Youth Movement (SYM), High Chief Promise Lawuru, also known as Ozigizaga, has called for inclusiveness and unity within the party.
Speaking at a press conference in Warri, Chief Lawuru described the wave of defections from the PDP to the APC as a normal feature of Nigeria’s democratic process, emphasizing that freedom of association is a constitutional right.
“Nigeria operates a multiparty system, and the movement of politicians between parties is part of democratic expression. During every general election, nearly 30 political parties participate, which clearly shows that a one-party system is not feasible in our country,” Lawuru stated.
Commenting specifically on Governor Oborevwori’s move to the APC, Lawuru welcomed him and his political structure to the party, urging the governor to lead with wisdom and fairness.
“My advice to Governor Oborevwori is to carefully manage party affairs and state governance by embracing both old and new members of the APC equally. In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, unity and collaboration must be our watchwords,” he said.
Using a metaphor to illustrate his point, Lawuru added: “The governor’s situation is like that of a man with two wives—if he favors one over the other, conflict is inevitable. Therefore, he must adopt a balanced approach to party leadership.”
Lawuru concluded by stressing that inclusivity is essential for sustaining harmony and progress within the APC in Delta State.
