Princess Kate Returns to Public Life After Cancer Treatment

By Advocate | June 15, 2024 | 2 min read |

Princess Kate, the Princess of Wales, made a tentative return to public life on Saturday at the Trooping the Colour military parade in central London, marking her first public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer.

The 42-year-old princess, who has been undergoing chemotherapy, said in a statement on Friday that she was "making good progress" with her treatment but was "not out of the woods yet." She added that the treatment is set to last for several more months.

Kate, accompanied by her husband Prince William and their children, arrived at Buckingham Palace on Saturday morning ahead of the parade.

Her return to public life comes just weeks after her father-in-law, King Charles III, was also diagnosed with cancer. Neither has revealed the type of cancer they have.

Charles, 75, was given the green light to resume public duties in April, and attended commemoration events in northern France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day earlier this month.

However, unlike previous years, he will inspect troops from a carriage at this year's Trooping the Colour.

Spectators on The Mall welcomed Kate's return to public life, with many expressing relief and reassurance at her reemergence. Royal officials have maintained that her appearances will depend on her treatment and recovery.

Trooping the Colour marks the British sovereign's official birthday and is a minutely choreographed military tradition dating back more than two centuries.

This year's event included three of five military horses that bolted through the streets of central London in April after being spooked by the noise of building construction.

The ceremony has its origins in the preparations for war, where all regimental flags — or colours — were shown to the soldiers so that they would recognize them in the confusion of battle.
