President Tinubu Urges US to Support Africa’s Bid for G20 and UN Security Council Seats

In a bold move to amplify Africa’s voice in global affairs, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the United States to back the continent’s bid for permanent seats in the G20 and the United Nations Security Council.

The call comes as President Tinubu seeks to redefine Nigeria’s role in international politics and champion African priorities on the global stage.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., President Tinubu met with US President Joe Biden to discuss a range of issues, including security, economic development, and climate change.

At the top of the agenda was the issue of African representation in key global institutions.

President Tinubu argued that Africa’s growing population, economic potential, and strategic importance make it essential for the continent to have a stronger voice in global decision-making.

He pointed out that the G20, which brings together the world’s largest economies, does not have a permanent African member, despite the continent’s significant economic growth in recent years.

Similarly, President Tinubu highlighted the need for Africa to have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, which is currently dominated by the five permanent members – the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France.

He emphasized that Africa’s security challenges, including terrorism, piracy, and political instability, require a more robust and inclusive response from the international community.

President Biden expressed sympathy with President Tinubu’s concerns and acknowledged the need for greater African representation in global institutions.

He promised to consider the issue and work with other world leaders to explore ways to address Africa’s concerns.

The outcome of this high-level meeting remains to be seen, but it is clear that President Tinubu’s efforts to push for greater African representation in global affairs have the potential to reshape the continent’s role in international politics and bring African priorities to the forefront of global discussions.
