President Tinubu Orders Immediate Upgrade of 16 Health Facilities in Nigeria

In Nigeria’s health sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of 16 health institutions across all six geo-political zones.

The President’s directive includes the improvement of infrastructure and equipment of these institutions, in line with his administration’s vision of overhauling the health and social welfare sector to ensure world-class cancer diagnosis and care is accessible to all Nigerians.

Among the institutions to be upgraded are the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Surulere and the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.

Six teaching hospitals have been marked for the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centers per facility, with a delivery timeline of 12-18 months.

The modernization of these facilities is aimed at improving screening and diagnostics for communicable and non-communicable diseases, reducing mortality rates, and improving outcomes for non-communicable diseases.

It will also create considerable employment opportunities for clinical, administrative, and managerial personnel across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

Furthermore, the critical health care service expansion projects will be carried out in 10 hospitals across all geo-political zones, focusing on radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterisation.

These projects are set to be delivered within 12-18 months, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.

The upgrade of these health facilities is a significant step towards improving the overall health care system in Nigeria, ensuring that world-class cancer diagnosis and care is accessible to all Nigerians.

This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the medical devices industry and contribute to the growth and development of the health and social welfare sector in the country.
