President Tinubu Mourns Comrade Kokori: A Tribute to a Nationalist and Labour Leader

In the bustling city of San Francisco, California, on March 8, 2024, the world received news of the passing of Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, a former General Secretary of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

President Bola Tinubu, a close friend and comrade of Kokori, expressed his deep sense of loss and admiration for the late labour leader.

President Tinubu, represented by his Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heneiken Lokpobiri, spoke at the funeral service held at St James Anglican Church in Oviorie-Ovu, Ethiope East local government, Delta State.

The President highlighted Kokori’s role in the fight for democracy and his unwavering commitment to the Nigerian people.

“Chief Sir Kokori is a foremost nationalist Nigeria has ever produced,” said President Tinubu.

“He is a man of uncommon courage and a selfless leader who put the interest of Nigeria above his own interest.

He is a man of proven integrity and a democrat who fought against the dreaded military regime for democracy to be restored in Nigeria.”

Tinubu emphasized the importance of Kokori’s legacy and urged the family, the people of Delta State, and the entire nation to take solace in the memory of a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of Nigeria.

He also acknowledged Kokori’s contributions to the labour movement, describing him as a voice for the voiceless and the less privileged.

The President’s heartfelt tribute to his comrade resonated with the attendees of the funeral service, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Minister of State for Development Ayodele Olawande, and President of NUPENG Prince William Akporeha.

The loss of Kokori is a reminder of the importance of unity, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.
