Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Bola Tinubu to step down before the 2027 election. Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Obi said Nigeria needs younger, more energetic leadership to combat worsening economic hardship and security threats.
Obi argued that Tinubu's administration has failed to meet the country's governance demands. "The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today.
He's tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home," he said.
The former Anambra State governor drew a sharp contrast between Tinubu's tenure as Lagos governor and his current performance. He told reporters the president lacks the capacity to govern effectively and has steered Nigeria in the wrong direction.
"As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere," Obi said. "The man should just step aside.
Yes, he doesn't have the capacity to do the job."
Obi called on Nigerians to shift focus from political games to urgent national problems. He highlighted poverty, hunger, education and insecurity as critical issues demanding immediate action.
According to Obi, recent global projections show nearly 79 per cent of Nigerians risk falling below the poverty line. Millions more face food insecurity, he noted.
When asked about United States President Donald Trump's recent praise for Tinubu's security efforts, Obi acknowledged the compliment but rejected claims it was sufficient. "Thank you to Donald Trump.
But we need to do more, far more than what we are doing," he said.
Obi insisted that while Tinubu may have done his best, the scale of Nigeria's crises demands greater action. "His best is not enough.
We need to do more," the NDC candidate told reporters.
