Presidency Slams Obi Over Criticism of New Presidential Aircraft Purchase

By Advocate | June 18, 2024 | 2 min read |

The Presidency has criticized the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his condemnation of the Federal Government's plan to acquire a new presidential aircraft.

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence had previously recommended the purchase of new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

The Committee's suggestion was made following an investigation into the condition of the aircraft in the presidential air fleet.

However, Peter Obi expressed his disapproval of the decision, labeling it as insensitive to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians due to the government's policies.

He argued that such a move highlights a disconnect between the government and the people, particularly in light of the rising insecurity, poverty, hunger, and homelessness in the country.

Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, responded to Obi's comments by questioning whether Obi would prefer the President's life to be at risk by using a faulty aircraft.

Onanuga emphasized the importance of ensuring the President's safety and welfare, suggesting that it would be irresponsible for any government to neglect this basic responsibility.

Onanuga also pointed out that the current presidential aircraft was acquired over 20 years ago during the Obasanjo administration and is now considered too small and unreliable.

He highlighted an incident where the President had to resort to a commercial airline after the aircraft developed a problem during a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The Special Adviser expressed his belief that the National Assembly's recommendation to replace the aircraft was a necessary step to ensure the President's safety and well-being.

He criticized Obi for making what he deemed to be unnecessary statements on the matter.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the government will proceed with the purchase of new presidential aircraft and whether this decision will be met with further opposition from political figures like Peter Obi.
