PDP dominates local government elections, wins all areas in Edo

In the Edo State council elections that took place on Saturday, September 2, 2023, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in all 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs). The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) announced the results, which revealed that the PDP defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), the other parties that contested in the polls.

All the LGAs in Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South senatorial districts participated in the council elections. The voters elected the chairmen and councillors of all the wards in the state. The elections were conducted in a calm and organised manner, with a large number of voters showing up across the state.

In most of the LGAs, the PDP candidates achieved more than half of the valid votes cast, winning by large margins. Some of the impressive winners were Dr. Eric Iyoba Osayande of PDP, who earned 27,768 votes in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, surpassing APC’s 3,085 votes and LP’s 3,857 votes; Aigbogun O. Collins of PDP, who garnered 11,963 votes in Esan West LGA, outshining APC’s 1,665 votes and LP’s 2,183 votes; and Zimbiril Marvellous of PDP, who collected 98,046 votes in Etsako West LGA, outperforming APC’s 29,445 votes and LP’s 23,832 votes.

As of the time this report was written, neither the APC nor the LP had issued an official statement regarding the council elections. However, some sources from the parties claimed that there were irregularities and tampering with the results.
