PDP Chairman Advocates for Female President in Nigeria’s Future

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has called for a female president in Nigeria in the near future.

Speaking at an event titled “Empowering Women and Girls for Political Leadership” organized by the party to commemorate the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 in Abuja on Friday, Damagum highlighted the significance of mothers and the role of women in society.

Represented by the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, Damagum emphasized the opportunities the party offered for women to realize their dreams and aspirations.

He acknowledged that men have failed the current generation and expressed his hope that, even if not in his generation, a woman would become the president of Nigeria one day.

The PDP National Woman Leader, Amina Arong, called for continuous advocacy for the active participation of women in politics in Nigeria.

She emphasized that gender equality in political participation and leadership is key to achieving the sustainable development goals by 2030.

Arong stressed the importance of inspiring women to pursue leadership roles and adequately training and preparing them to occupy key positions.

Arong also pointed out that evidence shows that organizations led by women fare better than their male counterparts during times of financial crisis.

She urged the end of discrimination against working mothers and breaking down maternal walls, which are prejudices faced by working mothers and women seeking jobs.

To empower women and encourage their participation in politics, Arong suggested creating a monetary scheme that allows women to generate funds as a means of support for women who intend to run for elective offices.

She also called for appointments and elective positions within the party to reflect the 35 percent affirmative action enshrined in the party constitution, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to contribute to the nation’s development.
