PDP accuses Tinubu of overseeing Nigeria’s descent into tyranny

The PDP has raised the alarm that Nigeria is sliding into tyranny and chaos under the APC-led administration.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Wednesday, the party expressed grave worry over what it saw as the APC’s plot to create a one-party state in the country.

The statement, posted on the party’s official X handle, alleged that a powerful clique in the Presidency was trying to undermine vital democratic institutions, especially INEC and the judiciary.

“The PDP warns of attempts and actions of a cabal within the Presidency to cripple the institutions of democracy in Nigeria, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary, in the desperation to impose a one-party state on Nigerians,” the statement read.

The party said that the emerging anti-democratic trend is evident not only in the alleged rigging of elections but also in conflicting judgements by electoral courts, notably the Appeal Court, whose rulings it said are at variance with the clear provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act of 2022, and INEC’s Guidelines and Regulations for Elections.

The PDP stressed the need to preserve democracy as the government of the people, as expressed by their will in elections.

It urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the guardian of the government, to speak up and condemn any attempt or action that can stifle democracy, erode the rule of law, and compromise the independence of the judiciary, especially regarding election matters pending before the courts.

The PDP called for a united front to protect democracy, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.
