Paraguay pulled off a stunning upset on Monday, eliminating four-time World Cup champions Germany on penalties. The South Americans won 4-3 in the shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

It was Germany's first-ever loss in a World Cup penalty shootout. Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah all missed crucial spot-kicks for the Germans.

Paraguay's path wasn't smooth either. Antonio Sanabria blazed one penalty wide, while Fabian Balbuena's effort was saved by 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

But when Jonathan Tah fired Germany's sudden-death penalty over the bar, José Canale stayed calm. He converted the winning penalty to spark wild celebrations.

Earlier in the match, Julio Enciso had given Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute. The former Brighton and Ipswich forward struck a well-placed header.

Germany came back strongly after the interval. Kai Havertz leveled things up when he flicked home a cross from Liverpool's Florian Wirtz.

The penalty shootout began badly for Germany right away. Havertz saw his opening spot-kick saved, and Woltemade followed suit moments later.

Germany became the first major nation eliminated in the tournament's new Round of 32 format. Paraguay ranked 41st in the world had achieved the unthinkable.

Paraguay's reward is a Round of 16 clash in Philadelphia on Saturday. They'll face either France or Sweden for a place in the quarterfinals.
