Oronsaye Report: FG may scrap NAFDAC, NOA, NSC and others, see full list

Aimed at streamlining Nigeria’s government and reducing costs, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the full implementation of the Steve Oronsaye panel report, which recommends the scrapping and merging of several government agencies.

The decision comes as part of President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency of Nigeria’s public sector.

The Oronsaye panel, which was set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, was tasked with reviewing the structure and operations of government agencies, parastatals, and commissions.

The panel submitted its report in 2014, recommending the abolition and merger of several agencies to reduce the cost of governance and improve service delivery.

According to the report, Nigeria has over 541 government parastatals, commissions, and agencies, many of which have overlapping functions and responsibilities.

The panel’s recommendations include the abolition of 12 agencies and the merging of 38 others.

Some of the agencies and parastatals that will be affected by the implementation of the report include the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), and the National Sports Commission (NSC).

President Tinubu’s decision to implement the report has been met with mixed reactions.

Supporters of the move argue that it will help reduce the cost of governance and improve the efficiency of government operations. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the potential impact on jobs and service delivery.

In response to these concerns, the government has stated that the restructuring will be carried out in a manner that ensures the protection of jobs and the continued provision of essential services to the public.

The government has also emphasized that the implementation of the Oronsaye panel report is just one part of a broader strategy aimed at reforming Nigeria’s public sector and making it more efficient and effective.

As the government moves forward with the implementation of the Oronsaye panel report, the full list of agencies to be scrapped and merged has been released. The list includes the following:

National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP)
National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC)
National Sports Commission (NSC)
National Orientation Agency (NOA)
National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA)
National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN)
National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO)
National Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (NACA)
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)
National Centre for Women Development (NCWD)

The implementation of the Oronsaye panel report marks a significant step in President Tinubu’s efforts to reform Nigeria’s public sector and improve the efficiency of government operations.

As the process moves forward, it will be important for the government to ensure that the restructuring is carried out in a transparent and accountable manner, with the protection of jobs and the continued provision of essential services to the public as key priorities.
