Private healthcare operators are ramping up investment across Nigeria as specialist medical services gain traction. The shift reflects growing demand from an ageing population, rising cases of chronic illnesses and consumers seeking better quality care.
OneHealth by AXA recently opened dedicated geriatric and optometry clinics at its Victoria Island Medical Centre in Lagos. The expansion highlights how private providers are stepping in to fill gaps left by Nigeria's stretched public health system.
Both clinics focus on specialist care tailored to specific patient needs. They represent a broader industry pivot toward preventive medicine and patient-centred treatment as demand for comprehensive healthcare accelerates across the country.
Industry players have called for more investment in specialist services as Nigeria battles a growing burden of non-communicable diseases. Eye disorders and age-related conditions continue straining the healthcare system, they've noted.
Wahen Egbe, chief business officer of OneHealth by AXA, said the new clinics respond directly to evolving healthcare needs. "The addition of these clinics reflects the growing demand for specialised medical services that address the evolving health needs of people at different stages of life," she told reporters.
Nigeria is recording more chronic and age-related illnesses among older adults, according to Egbe. The geriatric clinic was established to meet this mounting challenge.
The clinic delivers comprehensive assessment, prevention, diagnosis and long-term treatment for conditions linked to ageing. These include hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and mobility disorders requiring coordinated care from multiple specialists.
Beyond treating illness, the clinic promotes healthy ageing by helping seniors maintain independence and improve quality of life through personalised treatment plans. Operations run every Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Jadesola Idowu, country manager of OneHealth by AXA, explained the optometry clinic's purpose in an interview. The facility aims to boost access to preventive eye care and tackle the rising problem of undiagnosed vision problems.
Many eye conditions develop silently without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs, Idowu noted. Routine eye examinations catch these diseases early, she added.
The optometry clinic offers comprehensive eye examinations, vision screening, refraction services and corrective lens prescriptions. It also conducts eye health assessments and screens for common eye diseases affecting children, adults and older people.
The clinic provides preventive eye care counselling and occupational vision assessments as well. It handles prescription updates and refers patients for advanced ophthalmic treatment when needed, according to Idowu.
OneHealth by AXA operates as a subsidiary of the AXA Group.
