Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday, inaugurated a newly built cluster of housing units and critical support infrastructure in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area—marking a major step in the government’s pledge to rebuild the community destroyed in March 2024 after the alleged killing of 17 military personnel close to the community.
Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori said the project signals “a moment of renewal” for the displaced indigenes, describing it as a turning point “from pain to possibility, from loss to restoration, and from despair to hope.” emphasised that the resettlement site is more tjust han buildings, but “a place where life can begin anew” and a symbol of the state commitment to pursuing peace, reconciliation, and collective rebirth.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment under the MORE Agenda to rebuild affected communities and restore dignity to residents. He urged Okuama people to embrace unity and protect the new facilities, noting that government’s efforts would only be sustained through community cooperation. He also commended the contractors, security agencies, community leaders, and particularly the resilience of Okuama residents, whom he described as “the true heroes of this moment.”
Chairman of Ughelli South LGA, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, said the resettlement centre was constructed by the council, while thanking the Governor for complementing their efforts with a primary school, secondary school, and healthcare centre for Okuama.
In their appreciation message, community representatives Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor expressed gratitude to the Governor for his intervention after the tragic events of March 14, 2024. They pledged continued support for his administration and vowed to maintain peace in the area. The resettlement project features 40 living spaces, two blocks containing 20 toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and a paved, roofed walkway connecting all structures.
