Ogidigben Crisis: Pirah decries killings, urges calm, justice, unity

A Niger Delta leader, Mr. Omamofe Joseph Pirah has condemned renewed violent crisis in Ogidigben community, describing the killing of Mr. Onuwaje and the destruction of homes as tragic, unacceptable, and deeply regrettable.

In a statement, Pirah, a prominent leader from the community, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and property, noting that sustained efforts had long been invested in promoting peace and development in Ogidigben and the wider Ugborodo confederated communities.

He stressed that every indigene has a legitimate right to aspire to leadership positions within the Community Management Committee or the Trust, provided such ambitions are anchored on genuine commitment to community development. According to him, leadership aspirations must never degenerate into antagonism, violence, or attacks against fellow community members.

Pirah further observed that the community continues to grapple with unresolved challenges, particularly in engagements with International Oil Companies operating in the area—especially on employment and development. He said the present circumstances demand unity and a collective front to address these issues, rather than internal strife.

Appealing for restraint, he reminded residents that they are bound together as brothers and sisters confronting common external challenges, warning that internal aggression would only weaken their collective strength and bargaining power.

He called on the Eghare-Aja, the Olaja-Orori, and other Ugborodo leaders to urgently convene and engage Ogiame Atuwatse III to resolve the issues that sparked the hostilities and restore unity, inclusiveness, and lasting peace in the community.

Pirah also urged security agencies to carry out thorough investigations and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice, insisting that there must be no sacred cows, as accountability would deter future violence.

He concluded by praying for God’s comfort for the family of the deceased and called for the immediate cessation of all hostilities in Ogidigben.
