Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his commitment to delivering quality projects that prioritize public interest over personal relationships.
Speaking during the inspection of several projects in Asaba on Thursday, the governor emphasized that competence, integrity, and value for money are key to the success of his administration's M.O.R.E Agenda.
The inspected projects included Ogbeosonwe, Ogbeilo Road, Ogbogonogo Market Storm Drainage Project, Ogbe-Ofu Road (Off Jarret Road), Cable Point, and several others such as the 1.7km Amaechi Agusi Street with 10 adjoining streets, Dorah Allanah Street, and Redeemer's Street.
Governor Oborevwori stressed that serving the public was his primary responsibility. “I was elected to serve the people of Delta, not to please a select few. Friendship cannot and will not take precedence over the quality of projects we deliver to the people,” he said.
The governor criticized some indigenous contractors for delivering substandard jobs despite being awarded contracts. While noting the importance of supporting local businesses, he warned that contractors who fail to meet quality standards will face consequences.
"The major challenge we face is with some of our indigenous contractors. If you don’t patronize them, they’ll claim you’re neglecting local growth, but when you do, some fail to deliver. Those who cannot meet our expectations will be blacklisted," he declared.
He added, "The interest of the public is paramount. While some contractors may be unhappy with our strict stance, the majority of Deltans are pleased with our approach, and that is what matters."
Governor Oborevwori dismissed suggestions that his administration was engaging in media publicity. "What we are doing is real, not a media show. Those who know me well understand that I won’t compromise. If you want to be my friend, do a good job; if you don’t, I’ll have no problem kicking you out," he said.
He further noted, “Some people even say this kind of governor acts like EFCC. Well, I think that’s good for the people. I was elected by the masses, and I won’t allow a few individuals to dictate or derail the progress we are making.”
Addressing contractors’ requests for upward reviews of project costs, Oborevwori acknowledged the rising cost of materials due to the devaluation of the naira. However, he insisted that such reviews would only be considered for contracts awarded in 2022 and early 2023, before his assumption of office.
"When we came into office, the exchange rate was around N750 to a dollar, but now it’s about N1,600. Prices of materials have skyrocketed, and we understand their concerns. However, any upward review will only be considered for those who demonstrate quality work,” he explained.
Governor Oborevwori also urged Asaba residents to maintain a clean environment, directing the State Commissioner for Environment, the Chairman of the Waste Management Board, and the Chairman of the Taskforce on Environment to enforce compliance.
"Our environment is a reflection of who we are. I appeal to residents to keep their surroundings clean, and I have instructed relevant officials to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations,” he said.
The governor assured Deltans that his administration remains committed to delivering impactful projects and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. "We are here to do the right thing, and I won’t spare anyone who tries to compromise that vision," he concluded.
