Activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Delta State came to a solemn close on Thursday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Asaba, honouring Nigerian soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, led the state’s political leadership, service commanders and security chiefs in paying tribute to the fallen heroes at the ceremonial tomb of the unknown soldier.
In attendance were the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Tessy Diai; Service Commanders of the Armed Forces in the state; and the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command.
Also present were the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu; Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and Orodje of Okpe, HRM Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.); members of the Nigerian Legion, traditional rulers, and top government officials.
Governor Oborevwori, who was the Special Guest of Honour, arrived to full military honours and inspected a guard of honour mounted by officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Legion.
The ceremony featured a minute of silence, followed by interfaith prayers led by Christian and Muslim clerics for the repose of the souls of fallen heroes, the well-being of veterans and their families, and peace and unity in Delta State and the nation at large.
Governor Oborevwori later led service commanders, security chiefs, legionnaires, traditional rulers’ representatives and senior government officials in the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph.
Highlights of the event included the firing of ceremonial volleys and the release of white pigeons by the Governor, symbolising peace, hope and renewal, while reaffirming Delta State’s respect for the sacrifices of its fallen and living heroes.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually to honour Nigeria’s military personnel and to remind citizens of the cost of peace, freedom and national unity.
