Former President Olusegun Obasanjo traveled to Kano on Thursday to visit Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his home.
Kwankwaso is the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress party. He welcomed Obasanjo alongside Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the NDC's governorship hopeful in Kano.
According to Saifullahi Hassan, Kwankwaso's spokesman, the meeting allowed both men to exchange warm greetings. Hassan didn't elaborate on their specific discussions, however.
During Obasanjo's second term from 2003 to 2007, Kwankwaso served as Defence Minister. The two have sustained close ties over the years.
Peter Obi, the NDC's presidential candidate, also counts himself among Obasanjo's loyal supporters. Obasanjo openly backed Obi's bid in the 2023 presidential race.
Political observers suggest the former president played a role in bringing Obi and Kwankwaso together for their 2027 partnership. Such moves underscore his continued influence in Nigerian political circles.
The visit marks another visible sign of coordination among opposition figures ahead of the next election cycle. It reinforces speculation about Obasanjo's behind-the-scenes involvement in shaping opposition alliances.
