Nwoko’s Anioma push gains ground as NASS panel approves new South-East State

The long-held dream of creating Anioma State has taken a decisive leap forward as the National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitutional Amendment reportedly endorsed the creation of one additional state for the South-East region — a development many believe strongly favours Anioma.

At the heart of this breakthrough is Senator Ned Nwoko, the Delta North lawmaker whose persistent advocacy and political dexterity have brought the Anioma cause to the national spotlight. For years, Nwoko has argued that the South-East remains the only zone with five states, an imbalance that undermines equity in representation and resource allocation. His proposed Anioma State Creation Bill seeks to correct this by carving a new state from Delta North’s nine local government areas and integrating it into the South-East.

With the committee’s approval, the Anioma vision is now closer to reality than ever.

Nwoko’s Political Masterstroke

Senator Nwoko has built rare bipartisan momentum behind the Anioma cause, reportedly securing the backing of over 90 senators and rallying support from governors, traditional rulers, and civil society groups. He has consistently framed Anioma’s demand not as a local agitation but as a national question of justice and balance.

“If Nigeria truly believes in equity and fairness,” he insists, “the South-East must be brought at par with other regions — and Anioma provides the perfect answer.”

Why Anioma Leads the Pack:

While other proposed states like Aba, Adada, Orashi, and Etiti have been floated, Anioma stands out for several reasons:

Equity: It restores parity among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Cultural Affinity: Anioma shares linguistic and historical ties with the Igbo heartland.

Economic Strength: The region is resource-rich and agriculturally vibrant.

Population Advantage: Its inclusion would boost the South-East’s demographic and political weight.

With the National Assembly’s endorsement of a new South-East state, analysts predict that other agitations may rally behind Anioma as the most viable and nationally acceptable option.

A Turning Point for Nigeria’s Federal Balance

Should Anioma State be created, it would be a landmark correction in Nigeria’s federal structure — enhancing the South-East’s representation, easing administrative strain on Delta State, and demonstrating that national consensus can achieve what agitation could not.

For Anioma people, it would mean long-awaited self-determination; for Nigeria, a symbol of inclusion and equity restored.

The Road Ahead

The process still requires two-thirds approval from state assemblies and presidential assent, but momentum is clearly building. Senator Nwoko remains undeterred, vowing to sustain engagement with all stakeholders to see the process through.

What began as a regional aspiration is fast becoming a national movement for fairness. And as Abuja buzzes with renewed optimism, one truth echoes louder than ever: Anioma State is no longer a dream — it’s a reality in waiting.
