North West NLC Proposes N485,000 Minimum Wage at Public Hearing

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the Northwest zone has proposed a new National Minimum Wage of N485,000 at a public hearing held on March 8, 2024.

The event, which took place at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, was part of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.

The proposal was presented by the Kano State Chairman of the NLC, Mr. Kabir Inuwa, on behalf of the North West leadership.

Inuwa stated that the proposed N485,000 minimum wage was necessary, considering the dynamics of the national economy.

He emphasized that a new minimum wage should reflect the cost of living and ensure a decent standard of living for workers.

The NLC arrived at this figure by assessing the current economic conditions, inflation rates, and the basic needs of workers and their families.

The NLC Chairman also highlighted the importance of compliance with the existing minimum wage act, which provides protection for workers.

He suggested that the Federal Government should intervene to ensure compliance by withholding allocations to any state or public institutions that contravened the minimum wage law.
