‘No State Govt Can Handle Insecurity Alone’ – IPOB Urges Tinubu to Combat Insecurity through Regional Police

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has recently spoken out about the ongoing insecurity and insurgency in Nigeria, urging President-elect Bola Tinubu to focus on establishing regional police to effectively address the issue.

In a statement released on Friday, IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful criticized the Federal Government’s plan to establish state police, calling it a futile effort.

Powerful argued that the proposal for state police was perceived as a ploy to centralize power within a single political party.

Instead, he suggested that the incoming Tinubu administration should prioritize the establishment of regional police to combat the growing insecurity in the country.

He also cautioned against pro-terrorist gubernatorial tendencies, advocating for regional police commands that report to regional governance structures.

According to Powerful, the six recognized regions in Nigeria should be empowered by law to establish their own police commands, which would comprise indigenous officers from the region.

These regional police commands would report to the governance structure of their respective regions, including the governors’ forum and other regional stakeholders and leaders.

By implementing regional police, IPOB believes that Nigeria can effectively tackle the issues of insecurity and insurgency, as it would allow for better coordination and cooperation between neighboring states.

The organization also believes that this approach would prevent pro-terrorist governors from providing safe havens for criminals and terrorists in their states.

As the Tinubu administration prepares to take office, it remains to be seen whether they will heed the advice of IPOB and other groups advocating for regional police as a solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
