NLC, TUC announce Nov 8 as strike date over assault on Ajaero by police

The NLC and TUC have issued a strike notice to the Federal Government, demanding justice for the attack, abduction, and beating of their president, Joe Ajaero, and others on Wednesday.

The union leaders presented a six-point demand to the government on Friday, which included the immediate removal of the Imo State Police Commissioner and Area Commander and other officials who were allegedly involved in the violence and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.

Ajaero and other labour leaders were attacked by suspected state agents and security operatives at the NLC State Secretariat in Owerri, where they had gathered to start a planned protest over unresolved labour issues. The attackers smashed their vehicles, injured them, and took away their phones, money, ATM cards, and other valuables.

The labour leaders were in the state to protest against the non-payment of salaries, allowances, pensions, and gratuities and the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act.

The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation across the country. The NLC and TUC leaders will meet on Tuesday next week to decide on the next course of action.
