NLC Strike: Group Warns Against Hijack of Protest by Anti-Democratic Forces

A coalition of civil society groups on transparency and accountability has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the potential hijacking of their planned nationwide protest by anti-democratic forces.

The groups, including the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative, Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative, and Rising up for a United Nigeria, expressed their concerns at a joint press conference in Abuja.

The groups emphasized the importance of the NLC reassessing the situation with stoicism and circumspection, as the timing and reasons for the protest may lead to national chaos.

They argued that the current socioeconomic and political climate in the country is not conducive to a peaceful protest, citing instances of food items being looted and the potential for frustrated citizens to vent their anger on society.

The group urged the NLC to consider alternative means of addressing their issues, such as engaging in dialogue with the Federal Government.

They acknowledged that the NLC is patriotic and has always been peaceful but pointed out that the current conditions in the country could lead to a protest spiraling out of control.

Additionally, the group advised the NLC to avoid playing to the gallery and work on building strong partnerships with other civil society organizations and pressure groups to achieve the best outcomes.

They also called on the government to engage the Organized Labour to hasten the implementation of the agreements reached in October 2023.

The coalition of civil society groups urged the NLC to abort the planned protests in the interest of national security and to avoid potential chaos.

They encouraged the NLC to engage in dialogue with the government to address their concerns and ensure a peaceful resolution.
