NLC meets to work out living wages

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is meeting in Abuja to discuss a living wage that matches the current cost of living as it prepares to start talks on the new minimum wage with the Federal Government and organised labour.

The NLC has sworn not to give up on the recent assault on workers and their leaders in Imo State, which it said threatens the freedom of association and collective bargaining that are guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the ILO Conventions 87 and 98 on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining.

This was part of Mr. Joe Ajaero’s opening speech at the NLC 2023 Harmattan School with the theme “Building Workers’ Skills for Policy Engagement” in Abuja.

Ajaero, who was represented by Congress Deputy President Benjamin Anthony, said: “We are not shaken by the hardship and violence we faced while fighting for the rights of workers to get their lawful income and benefits.

“We are driven to keep working towards achieving decent work and improving working conditions in the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

He encouraged attendees to go through the training curriculum with a thirst for knowledge, asking questions, and sharing their experiences with the trainers and each other.
