Nine Suspects Arrested Over Killing of Police Officers in Delta State – IGP Egbetokun Confirms

Nine individuals have been arrested in Delta State in connection with the killings of police officers in the Ughelli area.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed the arrests during a force management meeting, stating that the suspects are currently providing valuable information to aid in the apprehension of those responsible for the killings.

This news comes after six police officers were tragically killed on February 23, 2024, in the Ohoro forest in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Six other suspects connected to the killings are still at large.

The incident occurred around the same time that 17 military personnel were also murdered in the oil-rich Delta State, in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area.

The attack on the military personnel, who were on a peace mission, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across Nigeria.

At their burial ceremony, the military authorities vowed to track down the perpetrators and emphasized that the tragic event would not deter their efforts to eradicate criminal activities in the country.

President Bola Tinubu honored the fallen soldiers by bestowing posthumous national awards upon them and granting scholarships to support the education of their children.

This gesture was widely seen as a sign of the government’s commitment to supporting the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

In response to the killings, the Nigerian government and security forces have intensified their efforts to combat criminal activities and ensure the safety of citizens and security personnel.

The arrests of the nine suspects in Delta State represent a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace and security in the region.

As the investigation into the killings continues, the Nigerian security forces remain committed to protecting the nation and its citizens from criminal elements.

The recent arrests serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by the country’s security forces and the importance of continued vigilance and collaboration in the fight against crime.
