Nigeria’s Police Force Bans POS Machines in Stations and Facilities Nationwide

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has prohibited the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines within police stations and facilities across the country.

The ban also includes other electronic mobile money transaction devices.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) made this announcement on Monday, citing “public outcry on alleged illegal and illicit transactions through POS machine operators and connivance with certain police operatives” as the reason for the ban.

The main objective of this prohibition is to “forestall perceived corrupt practices” and “maintain discipline within the Force”.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF emphasized that the ban is aimed at preserving the integrity and security of police operations, as well as preventing any possible criminal intrusion under the guise of POS transactions.

Despite previous directives, it has been observed that some Commands and Formations continue to ignore the ban.

The IGP has warned that any attempts to flout this directive will attract severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected Commands and Formations.

The NPF also stressed that all police officers must adhere to the ban and that any officer or POS operator found contravening this order will face appropriate disciplinary and criminal action.

The Nigeria Police Force is taking a strong stance against the use of POS machines in police stations and other facilities nationwide in an effort to maintain the integrity of its operations and prevent potential financial irregularities and illicit activities.
