Nigeria’s Need for Investigative Journalism: A Call for Change

In an event organized by the Daily Trust Foundation in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, a call for more investigative journalists in Nigeria has been highlighted as a vital step towards promoting transparency, accountability, and change within the country.

Dr. Nuru Yakubu, the former Rector of Kaduna State Polytechnic, emphasized the importance of investigative journalism driven by values such as patriotism, nationalism, transparency, and accountability during the 3-day Broadcast Investigation Training for journalists in the South-South held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The event, which took place on April 3, 2024, aimed to encourage more investigative reporting on television and radio platforms.

Dr. Yakubu expressed his belief that the training would inspire journalists to become agents of change by exposing societal ills.

He also praised the Daily Trust Foundation for their egalitarian approach in training journalists from various media organizations, despite them being competitors.

In his goodwill message, Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Information of Akwa Ibom State, commended the Foundation for investing in the training of journalists, noting that such efforts contribute to the future of the country.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration among media organizations, emphasizing that a united press can play a significant role in the democratization processes of Nigeria.

The training, which is part of a larger initiative to promote investigative journalism in Nigeria, aims to equip journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out in-depth investigations and report on critical issues affecting the country.

This effort is expected to contribute to the development of a more transparent and accountable society, ultimately fostering positive change in Nigeria.

As Nigeria continues to face various challenges, the role of investigative journalists in uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable is more important than ever.

With the support of organizations like the Daily Trust Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation, the hope is that more journalists will be inspired to pursue this vital work, leading to a better future for the country.
