Nigerian Women Entrepreneurs, Farmers Question Effectiveness of Govt Interventions on International Women’s Day

On this year’s International Women’s Day, Nigerian women entrepreneurs and farmers have raised concerns about the effectiveness of federal government interventions aimed at supporting women in their respective industries.

Speaking on Channels TV, they highlighted the need for targeted interventions that directly reach women’s groups and questioned the transparency and impact of the government’s current schemes.

Yemisi Zaria-Suleiman, a member of the Ogbonge Women Small Scale Women Farmers Association of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of targeted interventions and direct engagement with women’s clusters.

She stressed that the government should reach out to these groups to ensure that the interventions are impactful and that women have access to the support they need.

Amina Ibrahim, Founder of WildTaste Enterprise in Kano State, echoed these concerns, stating that the interventions should be sent to the right people and have a real impact on their lives.

She suggested that the government should speak to the business people, understand their needs, and create a map for where the interventions should be directed.

Both women agreed that the interventions should be impactful, with at least 60% of the targeted women receiving the support.

As Nigeria commemorates International Women’s Day, the voices of Yemisi Zaria-Suleiman and Amina Ibrahim resonate with a call for change.

Their critique and suggestions offer a roadmap for enhancing the efficacy of government interventions, aiming to ensure that support reaches those who need it most.

This dialogue opens up a critical conversation about the role of government in facilitating women’s economic empowerment and the collective effort required to bridge the gap between policy and practice.
