Nigerian Government Moves to Construct More Dams for Improved Water Supply and Irrigation

In an effort to address the perennial water shortage in Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced its plans to construct more dams across the country.

This initiative aims to provide a more reliable water supply and support irrigation for agricultural purposes.

During the 42nd Media Parliament of the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ilorin, the Managing Director of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) in Kwara State, Adeniyi Saheed Aremu, revealed that this project aligns with the priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Aremu emphasized that the construction of these additional dams is a key performance index of the current government.

Once completed, these water facilities will be made available for various uses to benefit the people.

The LNRBDA has already rehabilitated a number of water works to assist state governments and has ensured that the raw water in Asa-Dam can serve the residents of Ilorin.

To further improve the situation, the authority has decided to provide a solar system alongside new water facilities in communities, which will help mitigate the impact of residents’ inability to afford diesel or petroleum for their generators.

State Chairman of NUJ, Abdullateef Ahmed, expressed concern over the daily difficulties people face in search of clean and safe water.

Many residents are forced to travel long distances to access water, making this initiative by the Nigerian government a much-needed solution to a pressing issue.

The construction of more dams in Nigeria is expected to significantly improve the water supply and irrigation systems in the country, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a better Nigeria.
