Nigerian Agricultural Engineers Call for Local Solutions to Economic Challenges

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE) called for the use of homegrown solutions to tackle the current economic situation in the country.

The National Chairman of the NIAE, Prof. Joshua Olaoye, emphasized the importance of looking inwards to address local problems.

Prof. Olaoye, a Professor at the Department of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, stressed that no nation had developed without first looking inwards.

He highlighted the need for the government to provide an enabling environment for professionals in the country to showcase their capabilities and help turn the country’s fortunes around.

The institution expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in Nigeria, urging the government to give a listening ear to professionals within the country.

They believe that Nigerian-produced solutions can be more effective and efficient in addressing the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.

Prof. Folarin Alonge, a past Chairman of the NIAE and Dean of the Faulty of Engineering at the University of Uyo, echoed the sentiment, stating that inconsistency in government policies has hindered the progress of the agricultural sector.

He pointed to the previous administration’s border closure, which led to a significant increase in local rice production, only for the gains to be eroded when the borders were reopened.

Prof. Alonge also emphasized the importance of supporting and nurturing homegrown innovations, such as the rice de-stoner machine, and the need for the government to prioritize the use of locally produced goods.

He cited the example of Innoson Motors, which has made significant progress in vehicle production, but is often overlooked in favor of imported Toyotas from China.

The NIAE’s call for local solutions to economic challenges emphasizes the need for Nigeria to focus on developing its own agricultural engineering capabilities, as well as fostering an environment that encourages innovation and growth within the sector.

By doing so, Nigeria can address its economic challenges and pave the way for a more prosperous future.
