Nigeria Takes the Helm as Executive Board Chair of UN-Habitat

Nigeria has been elected as the current chair of the executive board of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to sustainable development and urban planning.
This development was announced by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo, during a meeting with UN-Habitat’s Portfolio Manager for West Africa, Mr. Mathias Spaliviero.
Gwarzo expressed his delight at Nigeria’s election and assured the UN-Habitat team that the country would effectively carry out its responsibilities as the executive board chair.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and UN-Habitat, highlighting their role as critical partners in achieving President Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Housing and Urban Development in Nigeria.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to providing secure, healthy, and decent environments for all Nigerians, as well as ensuring that the arrears of 2022 and 2023 contributions amounting to $500,000 are paid promptly.
Spaliviero acknowledged Nigeria’s election to the executive board chair, noting that Cameroon and Kenya had stepped down to allow Nigeria to assume this important role.
The UN-Habitat team looks forward to working closely with Nigeria to address the challenges faced by urban areas and promote sustainable development.
Nigeria’s appointment as the executive board chair of UN-Habitat comes at a critical time when the country is focusing on urban development and improving living conditions for its citizens.
This new role will enable Nigeria to have a stronger voice in shaping global policies related to housing and urban development, and it will also provide an opportunity to learn from other countries and share best practices in sustainable urban planning.
As Nigeria takes on this crucial leadership role, it is poised to make significant strides in achieving its Renewed Hope Agenda for Housing and Urban Development.
This development will not only benefit Nigeria but also contribute to the global effort to create sustainable and inclusive cities for all.
