Nigeria Plunged into Darkness as National Grid Collapses Again

Nigeria has once again been hit by a nationwide blackout as the national grid experienced a total system collapse on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement, citing a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours on Sunday as the cause of the power outage.

AEDC’s Statement and Assurance:
In the statement posted on their X account, the AEDC informed its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is a result of a system failure from the national grid.

The company assured its customers that they are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.

Background and Previous Blackouts:
This recent development comes after electricity supply dropped in parts of the country in 2023 due to constraints in gas supply to electricity generation companies. In that year, Nigerians experienced at least three nationwide blackouts on September 14, 19, and December 11.

The recurring issue of national grid collapses continues to be a significant challenge for Nigeria’s power sector. As the country strives to improve its electricity infrastructure, it is essential for the government and relevant stakeholders to work together to find lasting solutions to prevent future blackouts and ensure a stable power supply for its citizens.
