Lawmakers in Niger State have shut down the assembly indefinitely. They cited festering tensions with the governor's office as the reason.
Mohammed Abubakar-Kabir, who represents Chanchaga, moved the motion on Tuesday. He's known locally as Ustaz.
Ustaz didn't spell out exactly what the disputes were. But he warned colleagues that history would judge them harshly if they swept problems under the rug.
He stressed that lawmakers must protect the legislature's independence. Abdulrahman Gambo, representing Borgu, backed the motion.
Not everyone agreed with the shutdown. Jibrin Ndagi-Baba from Lavun argued against halting business over executive disagreements.
The chamber erupted into heated debate. Voices grew louder as members took sides.
Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji stepped in to restore order. He called for calm and tolerance of different viewpoints.
When the shouting died down, he put the motion to a vote. Supporters of the suspension won overwhelmingly.
Members then filed into a closed session. They planned to discuss the unresolved grievances in private.
