Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of the Naval Staff, has pledged to finish abandoned infrastructure across the Navy. He made this vow during commissioning ceremonies in Lagos this week.
Three major projects were unveiled as part of Navy Week celebrations and the Service's 70th anniversary. The facilities sit within Navy Town, Lagos.
Completed structures include a golf clubhouse, a 48-room block for junior ratings, and 16 two-bedroom apartments. All three projects are now operational.
Abbas described the developments as proof of the Navy's transformation over seven decades. He said they show the Service's push to better personnel conditions.
According to the admiral, these facilities demonstrate the Navy's evolution into a modern maritime force. They also signal commitment to infrastructure and staff welfare.
The accommodation block had sat incomplete for over five years before this administration took action. Abbas stressed that wasting such investments was unacceptable.
"Abandoned projects will no longer remain dormant when they can be completed," he told the gathering. The admiral was resolute about the Navy's new direction.
More abandoned projects will be finished nationwide, Abbas assured personnel and civilian staff. He promised ongoing efforts to raise living standards across formations.
Beyond sports, the Dolphin Golf Club House serves a broader purpose for the Navy. Abbas noted it'll foster professional networking among serving officers, veterans and stakeholders.
Camaraderie and institutional cohesion depend on such spaces, the admiral added. Personnel needed recreational outlets to maintain morale and relationships.
However, Abbas warned that commissioning ceremonies aren't the end of the journey. Maintenance culture must be prioritized across all facilities.
He urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the infrastructure given to them. Poor upkeep would undermine years of investment.
All support structures—from accommodation to recreational facilities—must meet the highest standards. Longevity depends on proper care by users.
The admiral also flagged wasteful electricity consumption within naval formations. He called for prudent energy use going forward.
Abbas credited President Bola Tinubu for backing the Navy's growth and modernization efforts. Presidential support had been unwavering, he said.
He also commended other stakeholders who contributed to these projects. Their partnership had made completion possible.
Navy Week celebrations highlighted the Service's achievements over seven decades of operation. These commissioning events marked a significant milestone for personnel.
