Nasarawa Assembly speaker tasks members-elect on quality representation

By Awayi Kuje

The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has called on the members-elect for the 7th assembly to provide quality representation to their constituents.

The Speaker made the call at the closing of a 3-day workshop organised for the newly elected members on Saturday in Jos.

Abdullahi, who reminded the members-elect of the huge and challenging responsibilities that lies ahead of them, urged them to unite irrespective of religious, tribal and party differences.

He observed that out of the 24 members coming into the 7th Assembly in the State, only nine were returning.

He, therefore, called for commitment and collaboration in order to succeed in the art of making quality laws for the state.

The Speaker also urged his would-be colleagues to bring to bear their experiences toward enacting people-oriented laws and resolutions that would impact positively on the lives of the citizens.

He also enjoined the lawmakers to support Gov. Abdullahi Sule and ensure enhanced collaboration with the other arms of government for the peace and speedy development in the State.

” I want to appeal to all of us to give our maximum support to Gov. Abdullahi Sule for the benefit of our people,” he said

” As we are preparing to take our oath of office come June, let’s have it in our mind that what our people expect from us is good laws and resolutions that will have direct bearing on their lives and for the overall development of the State.

“And we must think outside the box to come up with new ideas and innovations on projects and programmes that will impact positively on our constituents “he said

He disclosed that the 6th assembly was rated the second among the 36 State Assemblies in the country in terms of performance, hence the need to sustain the tempo.

Abdullahi promised to carry every member along, operate an open door policy and consolidate on his past achievements, if given another mandate to be the speaker.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 3-day workshop with the theme “Legislative Practice and Procedure” had both outgoing and newly elected members, and staff of the assembly as participants.

The workshop was sponsored by the state government in collaboration with Multichoice Ventures.
